Like bears emerge from hibernation and birds migrate in the spring, REI presents its big birthday sale every year around Memorial Day. This year’s event ends on May 30th. Many items have up to a 30 percent discount, but REI Co-Op members save up to a 20 percent discount on any full-price item they choose and a extra 20 percent off any REI Outlet item with the code ANNIV22.
Here are some of our favorite selections. If you don’t see anything you need, be sure to check out our summer guides on the best action cameras, the best portable grills, and the best reusable water bottles.
Coverage of WIRED Memorial Day offers
Updated May 30, 2022 – We’ve removed expired offers and added new ones, such as REI Stuff Sacks, a Nutcase Helmet, and a Sleeping Bag.
Special offer for Gear readers: Get to 1 year subscription to WIRING for $ 5 ($ 25 off). This includes unlimited access to WIRED.com and our print magazine (if desired). Subscriptions help fund the work we do every day.
Fitness and clothing deals
If you’re just starting to get serious about running, you don’t need to spend more than $ 200 on a running watch. The Garmin Forerunner Series is GPS-enabled for more accurate tracking of your pace and distance, and Garmin software offers features like PacePro to help you adjust your workout. See our guide to the best Garmin watches for more recommendations.
All Brooks bras and shorts are on sale with a 25 percent discount, which is great because I wear my running clothes almost every season. I like the wide waist and the wide, wide fit, which is a welcome change from the super tight, skinny shorts that seem to be on sale everywhere.
The Camelbak brand is synonymous with “hydration pack” as “Q-Tip” means “cotton”. There are several Camelbak packages for sale, but this 2-liter one is big enough for your biggest adventures.
If you spend time outdoors, the Buffs are very helpful (and so embarrassing, but I digress). I use mine as a headband to keep my eyebrows and sweat off my forehead or neck, as a half mask to keep dust at bay during mountain biking, or as a head warmer under the helmet of the bicycle when it is raining or cold. out.
WIRED writer Scott Gilbertson loves these sandals so much that he barely wrote an entire essay on them. See their guide to the best barefoot shoes for more information.
Like its tents, REI rain jackets offer incredible value for money. The Rainier is an affordable perennial choice in our guide to the best rain jackets.
Kari Traa’s Norwegian women’s sportswear could be a good choice if you don’t like the ubiquitous fit or purple cake that many other manufacturers use for women’s clothing. I tried on this jacket and it fits snugly under my outer shell. See our Layers guide for more information.
Camping and Kitchen Offers
I have nothing more to say about this convertible sleeping bag / coat unless you need it. My kids and I have ours, and we all go camping like dirty worms, to my spouse’s irritation. It’s Slanket Camp. You will wear it. Everyone. He. Time.
Although Solo Stove Pi (8/10, WIRED Recommends) recently replaced Ooni Karu in my affections, it’s still a good deal in one of our favorite pizza ovens. This one is smaller than the one I tried and doesn’t include the gas connector, but you can buy it separately with the money you save.
MSR makes some of the best backpacking equipment; my own backpack stove is a much older MSR Whisperlite. This all-in-one system packs itself comfortably and the pot screws securely into the burner. It’s both a great backpacking stove and an extra boiler set if your two camp stoves are busy with pancakes and eggs.
Rowing is an easy entry to water sports, but city dwellers often don’t have room for a kayak in their apartments. Oru folding kayaks are easy to store and transport, and do not go on sale very often. The less expensive Inlet model has sold out, but the more sporty Coast is still on sale. It weighs 32 pounds and unfolds in minutes. You’ll probably also need a personal watering device and a paddle.
I bought this on the recommendation of WIRED reviewer Scott Gilbertson. Not only do we pack our Memorial Day camping trip, but we also use it several times a day at home.
As we have found in our tests for the best tents, REI tents offer incredible value for money. I have been using my REI store for a decade. It is very difficult to find another backpack store with these specifications at this ridiculous price, which includes a rain fly, a footprint, some kind lines, i sack of things.
I just bought this air mattress because I’m tired of both my kids and the dog kicking me out of my sleeping pillow in their nightly attempts to curl up. But you need a bigger store to accommodate it.
REI sleeping bags are like the company’s tents: great value for money. We tested this Magma 15 on a late fall trip to the Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina and it stayed wonderfully warm, well below freezing temperatures (the bag has a temperature of 16 degrees). The 850 goose down feather and lightweight nylon case make a lightweight, compact bag that weighs just 1 pound and 12 ounces.
Okay, the sacks of clothes aren’t exciting, but they are the closet and the camping closet; the more you have, the better organized you will be. Anyway up to a point. Either way, don’t pay the full price for the nylon bags, grab them when they’re on sale. REI has also downgraded its package from three to $ 14 ($ 5 off).
It seems like I have to replace my insulated glasses with hot and cold drinks from the campsite every year. How do these disappear? We usually like Hydro Flask bottles and you can check out our guide to the best travel cups for more information. Our favorite insulated reusable water bottle, also from Hydro Flask, is also on sale for $ 26 (9 discount).
Portable power plants aren’t just to make sure you can work “out of the office” at base camp. I have this in our emergency preparedness kit to charge the batteries, phones, and laptops of the electric bike. For more (smaller) options, see our guide to the best portable chargers.
If you’re experiencing this #vanlife this summer, you can use your power plant to recharge your electric refrigerator, so you won’t have to occupy half the surface of the ice-cold refrigerator. Like the Goal Zero Yeti, it can be powered from a power outlet or from a solar panel.
I have no excuse to recommend these chopsticks, except that they are heavy and balanced to feel good in the hand. You will use your reusable computer much more often if it is beautiful and you like to pick it up. See our guide to the best reusable products for more information.
Cycling and climbing offers
Given the current supply chain issues, if you can find a bike in stock, do it. Electra is owned by Trek. The low geometry of the flat foot means that you can sit comfortably upright while placing both feet firmly on the ground when standing, a great help for novice cyclists. Unfortunately, the electric version is not for sale.
I swear this is the summer my kids will learn to ride a bike. If you are a member, you can also change your children’s bike for an older one.
If you’re still avoiding indoor gyms due to the ongoing pandemic, you can mount a board hanging on one of your doors to do push-ups and keep your fingers strong. I have this very simple and reliable.
If you have world quads, lots of money and little space, you absolutely need this compact bike simulator that can reproduce the exact feel of your bike, ride and change. Please note that you can also ride your real bike with one of the Wahoo trainers.
Your helmet should have MIPS (multi-directional impact protection system) technology, which allows it to rotate slightly around the head in the event of an accident and absorb more rotational force. As an advantage, Nutcase helmets also make you look more like a great skater than if you were entering Le Tour de Dork.
Speaking of looking like an idiot, do padded gloves help reduce the hassle of both cycling and spinning? Unfortunately, they do. REI offers a 25 percent discount on all Pearl Izumi equipment during the sale.
Your bike lock can be as personal as your bike; I use this highly valued chain lock because I have a cargo bike and I don’t like to go for a U-lock to work with both my bike and standard bike racks. There are many Kryptonite bike locks for sale; See the Best Bike Locks guide for more information.
If I run or ride a bike at night, I always put it on top of my clothes. It is light and adjustable; I forget I carry it, but the cars don’t.
