5 Questions to Ask Yourself If You’re Thinking About Becoming a Health Coach


Jim Curtis is someone who isn’t afraid to make a change.

“I’ve been in finance, I’ve had careers in media, I’ve had careers as a coach, as an entrepreneur, as an author, as a solopreneur and as the chief revenue officer of a major company.” He went to say.

While pivoting can be scary, Curtis says everything he’s done up to this point has been a natural progression because he knew where he wanted to go.

“I wanted a bigger challenge, and it just so happened that the Institute for Integrative Nutrition was looking for someone,” she said. “They contacted me, and it turned out to be a great fit. So I decided to take the leap.”

Jim Curtis is now the company’s chief revenue officer and chief brand officer. She sat down with Jessica Abo to talk about what it means to be a health coach and how to identify if this career path is right for you.

Jessica Abo: Tell us about the Integrative Nutrition Institute (IIN).

Jim Curtis:
It is a highly recognized school that has been teaching people how to live better for a long time and cultivating people to create a career in health coaching. The school actually identified the health coaching career about 30 years ago with Joshua Rosenthal, so it has been somewhat of a New York institution and has become a global phenomenon. It has 175 countries with students and 155,000 graduates. But it has also become a place where people can come to get a lot of information, wellness topics, and other types of education.

IIN is really for those people who are looking to transform their lives in some way or their careers. So we have a lot of people who come to us who are experiencing something negative in their life. They don’t feel good physically or mentally, they don’t like their job, they have diabetes, they have a physical illness or they just don’t feel good about their body, they don’t feel good about their body or they are suffering from stress. So IIN is really for those people who want to make a change in their life or their career because we teach so many different modalities in a learning management system with behavior changes from 95 of the most respected people in the world when it comes to these topics. so that a student can easily learn how to improve their lives through nutrition and also become a health coach, starting a whole new career that is very rewarding.

For those who are interested in going down this path, what can you tell us about the curriculum and how it is structured?

Curtis:
The reason we set up the curriculum the way it is is because it leads you down a learning path that allows you to change your behavior and make real changes. So start with an explanation of primary foods. So these are all the things that you ingest, that feed you, that are not food on your plate. It’s relationships, spirituality, connecting with other people, and your career. Secondary foods are actually the foods on your plate and we teach 144 different dietary theories. So we do it over a six or twelve month program and at the end of it, you’re ready to go out and live your life better and change the health of other people around you and your family, your friends or the your community , become a health coach and start coaching people as a career because we also teach coaching skills and business skills, or many of the people who graduate go on to do so many other things in wellness.

What are some of these things? What are some of these careers that people pursue after graduation?

Curtis:
People often think that the only career you can do when you graduate as a health coach is to be a health coach. And this is definitely a race. So people go around coaching other people on how to improve their lives and their health, and they often choose a niche, so you’re a hormone health coach or a health coach that focuses on behavior change through the subconscious change. through hypnosis, or you focus on gut health or many other things. But there are many other things you can do as a health coach to start giving credibility to the product you want to create. You could write books, become a content creator, or go work for a doctor’s office or wellness center. If you decide to go down the route that is more content creation or product creation, we have so many successful graduates who have created amazing products like Purely Elizabeth, Sakara Life, Days Off Candy and White Tiger. I am very excited to talk about it.

Finally, Jim, what do you think are five things that someone should think about if they are considering becoming a health coach?

Curtis:
This is a very good question and I think it really starts with education. There are many options as to where you can actually educate yourself, and often people start giving advice and coaching people without any formal education. Formal education is more than understanding nutrition. You start to understand how to train people, how to be a guide and then the business around it.

So the first thing you should consider is where you will be educated, what you want in a school, and how you will use that credential.

The second part I think you should consider is a lifestyle. You want a lifestyle that gives you the freedom to schedule your own time and work the hours you want to work, but also find the clients and schedule them with them, meaning that the freedom to work on your own time also tends to to create a bit of ambiguity around when you will work? Or do you want to be someone who has a more structured job that can be in an office and work 9 to 5? This will really help you identify what type of health coach you want to be.

The third part is, are you passionate about health and wellness? Are you excited to see the new trends in the world? Are you excited to really dive into nutrition? Do you have real desire and desire? Are you excited about these things because this is necessary as a health coach?

Number four would be to make you want to help other people. If this gives you a purpose and if it really allows you to feel good and contribute to the world in a positive way by creating a ripple effect of health in the world, then health coaching is definitely for you.

And the fifth is, do you have the energy and enthusiasm to transform yourself? First, look and continue to work on yourself so that you can radiate what the world really needs for well-being.
