7 Misconceptions That Lead to Burnout

While many of us know how to stay healthy, it is difficult to prioritize even when we are well, much less in times of exhaustion and stress.. When we are overwhelmed and feel unsteady, it may seem impossible to do anything beyond the essentials. However, it is precisely when we need to spend more time on ourselves and be proactive in the face of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty.

With this article, my goal is to help you see the self-destructive beliefs that hold you back so that you can not only cope with life’s disorders but thrive. To get started, I’ll guide you through seven of the most common misconceptions that lead to exhaustion and prevent people from getting the help they need to cope and recover.

1. “I like my job, so I won’t get tired.”

Even when you love your profession, it doesn’t make you immune to exhaustion. Intense work schedules and a lack of boundaries can drain your energy, even when you’re excited about your role. Spending every free time at work can also lead to conflicts in your personal life, with loved ones feeling sidelined or as if they are no longer a priority for you.

2. “I burned myself because I’m weak; I’ll work harder.”

Ambitious people who want to build good relationships with their teams give a lot of themselves to their work and are more prone to exhaustion. There is no reason to be ashamed of exhaustion. More than a sign of weakness, it indicates that you have an unmet need and that there is a disconnect between what you are capable of doing and what you have been doing. Working harder will not bridge your needs and circumstances.

3. “Stress is the price of success.”

This is exactly what my former client, a CFO in Germany, believed just before experiencing exhaustion. During a six-month layoff from work, she followed her doctor’s advice and underwent therapy, training, and discovered healthy ways to cope with stress.

Although his job responsibilities did not change when he returned, his philosophy, style of communication, and setting boundaries improved dramatically. As he no longer believed that he was a slave to his work, he also approached it with more clarity and perspective and came to stand out in his role. It is a perfect example that the right mindset is the key to a successful life change.

4. “Everyone else seems to face me less.”

It’s easy to feel inadequate when you hear your friends brag about their long nights and weekends at work. Appearances, however, seldom reflect reality. Boasting is often an attempt to convince yourself that your sacrifices are worthwhile.

Recent psychological research reveals that there are high levels of exhaustion between industries and sectors, so it can be assumed that people in your own network and circle of friends are experiencing this as well.

5. “Exhaustion is a normal part of building a business.”

In the early days of any company, there is a critical time when you need to start downloading jobs, but you do not have the resources to hire employees. Even after hiring support, you have to invest time, emotional energy, and carry a heavy cognitive load to create quality systems and controls. While this can, and often does, lead to exhaustion, exhaustion should not be considered the norm or the price of success as an entrepreneur.

Yes, having a business requires commitment, creativity, and energy for an extended period of time. But taking care of yourself should be considered as one more element of your business that will ensure its long-term success, and this is non-negotiable.

6. “I’ll lose everything.”

Failure to deal with burnout can have serious consequences for your relationships and quality of life. Locked in a constant stream of emotions and trapped in our own thoughts, it can be easy to lose sight of the signs that our relationships are deteriorating. My clients often tell me that their spouses were relieved to hear about exhaustion while waiting for a divorce.

More than a real breakup, it is the lack of communication and fear of your loved one’s reactions that will negatively affect your relationships. Likewise, your co-workers will have trouble understanding why your mood, productivity, and quality of work have decreased. Without listening to your perspective or understanding your struggles, they will be allowed to draw their own conclusions, which are usually unfavorable.

Trying to wait for your exhaustion instead of facing it can lead to the loss of your job or even your spouse.

7. “So many people have it worse than me; I have no right to complain.”

Because our problems may seem trivial compared to people struggling to make ends meet, many of us are even embarrassed thinking about them and are afraid of being ungrateful for voice they. However, regardless of the tragedies we see around us or the markers of success we have achieved, our dilemmas and emotions are valid. Ignoring them only makes the situation worse: working with difficult emotions is the only way to make them go away.
