The layoffs have begun at Twitter.
The layoffs come a week after Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and CEO of companies including SpaceX and Tesla, bought the social media company.
Musk has already fired top executives, including former CEO Parag Agrawal, and has now moved to lay off roughly half of Twitter’s 7,500-strong global workforce.
Why is Elon Musk starting mass layoffs?
There were numerous reports this week that Musk would cut 75% of the workforce, but Twitter’s new CEO denied the accounts. However, a Slack message that circulated on Wednesday implied that 3,738 would be laid off, about half of the company’s employees, the New York Times reported.
According to the outlet, on Thursday, an employee wrote in Slack asking if the “Red Wedding” had begun, and minutes later, Twitter sent an email to all of its employees informing them that layoff notifications would begin Friday.

“In an effort to put Twitter on a healthy path, we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday,” the email said.
The email further stated that if you were fired, workers would be notified via their personal emails at 9am PST on Friday and, if they were still employed, they would receive an email via their work
“We recognize that this is an incredibly challenging experience, whether it affects you or not,” the company’s email added.
“It’s a breakup over text,” an employee affected by the layoffs told Insider.
The withdrawals reportedly began before the 9 a.m. email on Friday. People started getting blocked from their work accounts, leading many of them to assume they were on the cut list.
“As of 11 p.m. PT, more than 1,000 people at Twitter had lost their jobs, according to employees and messages seen by Insider,” the outlet wrote.

There are also questions about whether the company followed the WARN ACT. In California’s version, employers must give 60 days’ notice of a “mass layoff.”
As of Thursday, the California Department of Employment Development had not received the relevant notice from Musk, it said NOW.
A Twitter employee who said they were fired Tuesday filed a related class action lawsuit Thursday.
Some people, however, are not sorry to see the back of the site. “I’m actually relieved,” one fired worker told Insider.
Others are worried about severance pay, especially if they are starting families imminently.
Some employees I’m hearing from on Twitter are desperate to be fired and get severance pay. The work culture there is beyond toxic.
Some are afraid to push back against Elon because they don’t want to risk being fired for a cause — in disagreement with Elon — and losing their severance pay.

It is also clear that it will be a different culture for those who remain. According to the Times, Twitter’s monthly “Days Off” were removed from calendars. One employee tweeted a photo of herself sleeping in the office.
Twitter did not respond to a request for comment.
