Harry Kane scored a goal and lost the game in perhaps his last home appearance for Tottenham.
The England captain, who has again been linked with an off-season move away from Tottenham, curled home from an indirect free-kick in the eighth minute only for Bryan Mbeumo to score twice and score another second-half goal for Brentford in their 3-1 Premier League win on Saturday.
Tottenham could now struggle to qualify for any European competition for next season, having come into the game in seventh place, the division’s only qualifying spot for the third-tier Europa Conference League .
Brentford stayed in ninth place but are just one point ahead of Tottenham heading into the teams’ final games of the season next weekend.
Kane’s 28th league goal of the season was perhaps his best of the campaign as he slotted into the top corner with a 25-yard shot after Dejan Kulusevski rolled the ball back with the sole of his foot in a free kick It put Kane eight goals behind the league’s top scorer, Erling Haaland.
Kane will be 30 when next season starts. With just one year left on his contract, he and Tottenham could decide this summer is the time to part ways to give the club the chance to cash in on their star player and give him a better shot at trophies.
“Speculation is speculation,” said Tottenham interim manager Ryan Mason, whose latest short-term spell is likely to end after the trip to Leeds on May 28.
“We have an important game against Leeds and there will be talks. There are massive decisions to be made but we can’t look too far ahead. This is after the last game of the season and those talks will definitely happen.”
Kane joined the rest of the squad to return to the pitch at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the end-of-season thank you lap, when he was also presented with the club’s player of the season award from the fans.
By then, most of the home fans had left, with Tottenham slumping to a fifth defeat in their last seven games.
Mbeumo cut in from the left for both of his goals, in the 50th and 62nd minutes, then led a counter-attack before setting up Yoane Wissa for a composed finish to seal Brentford’s victory in the 88th.
Brentford were without Ivan Toney, yes granted an eight-month suspension Wednesday for breaching betting regulations.
Brentford host Manchester City in their last game.
