How a pediatrician-turned-entrepreneur helps EO members communicate with tweens — —

Like entrepreneurship, parenting does not come with a manual. Parents are left alone to learn how to raise well-adapted, informed, and self-initiated adults. But even with an EO-level learning set, parenting isn’t always easy.

Even the best parents find it difficult to talk to their children about difficult topics such as puberty, sex, and pornography. Amazing moms and dads, for fear of saying the wrong thing, sometimes say nothing! This is a serious service to children, who naturally want information and knowledge about the physical changes they experience during puberty.

Fortunately for EO members who are part of MyEO Families, entrepreneurial and parenting paths intersect at the right time to provide you with the learning you need to meet this challenge.

Pediatricians on mission

Dr. Lisa Klein and Dr. Carrie Leff, pediatricians, are enterprising with the mission of helping parents share positive and productive discussions with their children about awkward topics.

“It started in 2015 when our kids were‘ that age, ’and people asked us how, as pediatricians, we talked to our kids about puberty,” Dr. Klein explained. “Turning Teen started as a passion project to help friends talk to their children and eventually became a business. We offer children lifelong lessons that will continue to benefit them as they grow and mature. “.

Turning Teen offers virtual educational workshops to help parents start awkward conversations with their children. The programs, tailor-made for parents and their children, help involve your child in getting to know their body with you by their side. The different programs offered include Body Basics for Girls, Body Basics for Boys, Body Image, Being My Best Self for Girls, Emotion Management and a “Parent Only” Discussion called Surviving puberty for the second time.

Interactive virtual programs teach children about anatomy and puberty, providing age-appropriate and medically accurate information that your child will understand. Parents benefit from resources and suggestions on how to “continue the conversation” at home. Pediatricians ask (and answer!) Difficult questions so parents don’t have to. The virtual program serves as a springboard for other questions and similar topics.

Empower parents to address awkward issues

“Basically, our parent-child programs help ease this awkward opening to start the conversation,” Dr. Lisa said. “The data shows that if you start these conversations with children early, between the ages of 8 and 10, you can talk about potentially uncomfortable topics like sex and drugs before they have any other knowledge base on the topics. Then they start. to see their parents as a reliable source of quality information, and you can share your accompanying family beliefs and values. “

Vladimir Gendelman (EO Detroit), founder and CEO of Company Folders, Inc., and his wife attended Turning Teen programs with their children. “Together, my son and I attended an illuminating conversation program with Dr. Lisa. He opened the door for us to talk more openly after the show ended. Thanks to Turning Teen, we have language and a common ground that extends to other topics, because we were both together in class. We have referred to this class many times since. “

MyEO Families hosts the Talking Teen event

Vladimir shared Turning Teen’s information with Ab DeWeese (EO Fort Worth), which leads a group of EO parents who want to improve their parenting skills. As a result, Dra. Lisa Klein will offer a free parent-only program for MyEO Families members called “How to Talk to Your Children About Puberty, Sex, and Pornography” at July 13th at 5 p.m. ET. All EO members, their spouses and life partners, and EO staff are invited to join MyEO Families and attend the program.

“As entrepreneurs and parents, we want to give our children the tools to succeed,” Ab said. “Talking to other EO parents, I realized that many of us have the same questions: how do I raise my children and throw them into the world as self-sufficient human beings who will become self-initiated adults with enough motivation to create a life? successful? “

“Another thing that keeps popping up in our group is,‘ How do I get ‘The Talk’? What is the right age? They are now exposed to so much at such a young age. How do we guide them through what they see on the Internet and hear in school, and how do we tell them about it in a way that they understand?

Pediatricians who have become Turning Teen entrepreneurs believe in helping parents initiate these complicated conversations with their children. They provide direct, informative and honest information about puberty and sexuality.

“If you know your body, do fewer searches on the Internet, take better care of your body, and make good decisions about body safety,” Dr. Lisa said. “It’s very important to talk about these things with your children. Body literacy (knowing the proper names of all parts of the anatomy) decreases a child’s risk of sexual abuse and other bad situations.”

Want to learn more? The event in progress Wednesday, July 13th is designed to give MyEO Families members a good start on some basics as to how old parents should approach on specific topics and provide attendees with resources to talk to your children.
