Lionel Messi added another milestone to his already prestigious resume on Sunday.

The all-time great scored his 700th career goal in Paris St. Germain by 3-0 over Marseille.

Messi’s landmark goal came in the 29th minute of Sunday’s game when he received Kylian Mbappé’s cross in the center of the box, hitting the ball into the net from a few yards out. The Argentine striker was assaulted by his PSG teammates after the goal.

With the goal, Messi became the second player in history to score 700 club goals, according to the IFFHS (International Federation of Football History and Statistics). The other player who has done it is Messi’s old rival, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi’s latest achievement comes just two months after he led Argentina to a World Cup, the first title of his career, a feat many felt cemented his status as the greatest ever to play the game.

Messi began his senior club career with FC Barcelona in 2004, playing the first 17 years of his club career with the squad. He scored 672 goals during his time with Barcelona, averaging approximately 40 goals per season during that stretch.

After the 2020-21 season, Messi joined PSG. The 35-year-old hasn’t scored as often for the French club, netting 28 goals in 62 games. But he has also shared the field with Mbappé and Neymar for much of his time at PSG.

Messi wasn’t the only member of PSG to reach a milestone in Sunday’s win. Mbappé scored the other two goals in the game, giving him 200 goals for PSG. The 24-year-old tied Edinson Cavani for the most goals in the club’s history, doing so in far fewer games than Cavani (Mbappé has played 246 games for PSG while Cavani has played 301 for the squad) .

Just as Mbappé did for him, Messi assisted Mbappé on both of his goals on Sunday. Messi set up Mbappé for a shot into the center of the box on a deep pass, which Mbappé connected to score a goal in the 25th minute.

Later in the game, Mbappé took the ball out of the box. He passed the ball back to Messi, who sent a chip pass for Mbappé as he entered the box. Mbappé connected with his left foot and scored a goal in the 55th minute for his 200th for PSG.

Sunday’s game was also a much-needed win for PSG. They went into Sunday’s match just five points clear of Marseille at the top of Ligue 1. Sunday’s win gives PSG 60 points from 25 games this season, while Marseille remain in second place with 52 points.
