Toyota Europe

Since its entry into force on November 4, 2016, the Paris Agreement established a major call to action for the 196 parties that agreed on their legally binding international treaty on climate change. In this characteristic agreement, there were 17 broad sustainable development goals (SDGs) outlined that emphasized a holistic approach to achieving sustainable development for all.

These goals have required rapid and systemic change, and since the beginning of the treaty, the EU has seen different levels of achievement for the different SDGs.

On the one hand, the EU has been able to reach its 2020 energy efficiency target and, according to the progress made so far, it seems to be on track for its 2030 target thanks to the growing use of renewable energy. in the region. This shows that in the last five years, the EU has been able to achieve its goal of affordable and clean energy (SDG 7).

On the other hand, according to a report from the European Commission, progress towards the goals in the areas of health and well-being (SDG 3), sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11) and the reduction of inequalities (SDG 10) only it was classified as moderate, showing the need for further development in society for these purposes.

About a third of the largest public companies in Europe have committed to reaching zero net by 2050, but in order to incorporate the remaining two thirds and see that companies meet a more inclusive range of ‘SDGs, cohesion between EU companies large and small. should be part of the strategy.

Automotive giant Toyota Motor Europe has partnered with ISDI Accelerator, a business accelerator founded by Spain’s leading digital business school, in an effort to generate a collaborative spirit towards some of these goals are poorly served in the EU.

Let’s take a look at how these two entities are bringing together startups that are innovating in the “Mobility for All” space and sustainability so that the EU can start achieving its SDGs in every way.

Channel entrepreneurial efforts for sustainability

According to a statistical analysis of sustainable development and the green economy in the EU, an approach that promotes innovation at the social level requires seeking new and more effective solutions that reduce negative externalities in the areas of production, distribution and consumption.

The implementation of this trifecta will help to improve the competitiveness of companies, both in the domestic and foreign market. In addition, it shows that the assumptions of environmental protection and sustainable development are a carrier of technical progress and innovation.

In recognition of this, Toyota Startup Accelerator, hosted by Toyota and ISDI Accelerator, the investment lab of ISDI Digital Business School, has selected five winning startups to participate in its Demo Day, which will take place tomorrow, 24 June, in Madrid at ISDI headquarters. .

The selected startups will present their innovative sustainable solutions in three major verticals: mobility for all, carbon neutrality and the circular economy, investors and the EU startup press body.

At the event, the five participants will move on to the second stage of the ISDI + Toyota Startup Accelerator presenting the technologies they have been developing related to these categories.

Specific categories include:

Mobility for everyone:

  1. Revolve Wheel (Germany) created the world’s first active wheelchair that meets the standards of a universal cabin suitcase or the trunk of a compact car.

Carbon neutrality:

  1. HySiLabs (France) is developing an innovative solution to facilitate the transport of hydrogen, loading and releasing hydrogen in a single liquid conveyor.

  2. PurCity (Denmark) works to improve air quality by converting buildings into large-scale CO2 air intake installations.

  3. CargaTuCoche (Spain) proposes a platform for residential infrastructure for charging electric mobility that allows you to share charging points with other people.

Circular economy:

5. MicroWave Solutions (Switzerland) accelerates circular carbon savings by recycling plastics, rubbers and carbonaceous materials into critical and advanced materials such as graphene.

Startups will present their sustainable and mobility projects to key investors, Toyota and ISDI executives, as well as members of the entrepreneurial community and the media.

Toyota has invested 100,000 euros in free equity financing, opening its facilities as test benches and equipping experts to support the development of concept testing with startups. ISDI has provided training, mentoring, and brokerage with corporations and investors to support the business development and investment needs of startups.

This feature-rich event offers young businesses the opportunity to unlock new funding opportunities and establish new partnerships with corporate and technology ecosystems if successful. It also gives them the opportunity to help shape EU society in a more holistic and sustainable way for the future.

Incorporate sustainability into the EU’s business agenda.

An Accenture study found that EU companies will need accelerated action to achieve the SDGs, as only 5% of companies are on track to achieve their goals. From the pace of the specific emissions reduction target, the data show that between 2010 and 2019, a negligible 9% is on track to reach its zero net target for 2050.

This makes it vital for companies with the most sustainable innovations in Europe to receive the resources they need to start changing the paradigm. Since its inception, ISDI Accelerator has developed dozens of incubation and acceleration programs that have led to the implementation of hundreds of startups and thousands of companies in all sectors.

Combined with Toyota support, the Toyota Startup Accelerator will help channel the entrepreneurial efforts of members of Europe’s startup ecosystem to help achieve a broader spectrum of ODS more quickly and accurately.

Through collaboration between public entities, corporations, educational institutions, investors and founders, a greener future is possible.
