Why Resisting Change Will Only Hurt Your Business

When I’m training people in digital marketing for their business, one thing I come across is this great resistance to change. Even when I’ve shown them how the use of strategies will catapult their business to new levels, and they know they should, most still struggle.

To be successful as entrepreneurs, most of us have to change something in our lives: our habits, our management style, our systems, or even the product or service we offer. When markets change, you have to pivot and adapt. When you experience constant problems in your business, you need to change. We still know that change is still difficult. But if our lives were in danger, we would make the change, right? Well, maybe not.

Most would risk death rather than change

Alan Deutschman wrote a book called Change or die. In it, he says that cardiological studies show that 9 out of 10 people at risk of heart attack will not make the changes they need to make. They are instructed not to smoke, drink or eat less, avoid a lot of stress and exercise regularly – all the things they need to do to have the best chance of staying alive. Their doctors tell them that if they don’t follow through, they will probably die. However, when you see them again a year later, 9 out of 10 have not yet made the changes.

Well, the Mutual of Omaha became smart and realized that they were paying a lot for cardiac bypass surgeries and angioplasties. In the early 1990s, they partnered with Dr. Dean Ornish of UCSF to conduct an experiment. They took 194 patients who had clogged arteries and horrible habits. They were given the same instructions that everyone else had about healthy living habits, but they added things like meditation, support groups, aerobics classes, and expert coaches to help them quit smoking, and so on. They did this program for a year and then they let everyone else go. themselves. After three years, 77% of patients were still doing what they were supposed to do. They did not need surgery, and some had even reversed their condition.

What was the difference? I would say it has to do with three main things: support, responsibility, and expert coaching or mentoring.

1. Find a support group for your classmates

This is really the concept of masterminding that is one of the 13 keys to Napoleon Hill’s success. It’s about meeting people who share your drive to succeed. They don’t have to be in your industry. In fact, sometimes it’s better not to. But they must have the same ideas and come together “in the spirit of harmony.”

A group of brains has all sorts of practical benefits. On the one hand, it brings you extra years of experience. If you have been in the business for three years and another person in the group is seven years old, that adds up to 10 years of experience. It gives you different perspectives on the issues or issues you are dealing with. A group of masterful brains can be motivating as you encourage each other to succeed. It can help cheer you up when you come across what looks like a brick wall. The group can inspire you as you see others succeed. A brain can come up with a lot of creative ideas that are out of your own box. And when you need to make any changes, they can help you as you go along.

2. Get an expert coach or mentor

I have had a number of great coaches and mentors throughout my career. Some have been for different aspects of my business. Others for certain stages of my business or my own growth as a leader. A great coach or mentor has been where you want to go so they know what it takes to get there. When I chose a coach to help me with my leadership skills, he was someone who was really a great leader. When I received training to speak in public, not only did they teach, but they themselves were great speakers.

A great coach helps you stay focused, whether it’s the skills you need to learn or what you need to do for the next stage of your business. And when you get out of the way, they can redirect you. A coach or mentor can give you an honest view of what you are doing that can slow you down and other options that would serve you best. A good coach can help guide you through difficult transition periods or big changes, so keep an eye out for the award.

3. Take responsibility

An important benefit for coaches, mentors, and business support groups is accountability. Accountability means taking responsibility for your actions and being truthful about your results. Do what you say you will do when you say you will. And if not, take responsibility for what you’ve done and fix it. This is what builds trust between you and others, whether it’s your shareholders and investors or your spouse and children. We all really want that confidence, so you’re motivated to do what you need to do.

As an entrepreneur, you are often the only one responsible. These are your dreams and goals at stake. And it is much easier for most of us to disappoint ourselves than for someone else. A coach or a group of brains can replace this “other”. You want to maintain your confidence so that you are automatically more motivated to follow him.

Nine out of 10 people fail to make changes even in life or death situations. With a large group of brains and expert advice / tutoring in addition to the responsibility they offer, you can be in the 77% to make the changes you need to be successful.
