For many of us entrepreneurs, our main goal is our business. But it shouldn’t be. Our overall health should be more of a priority. We work many hours a day, leaving little time for recreational activities. We are more likely to live a longer, more balanced life when we make our health and personal care part of our regular lives.
A survey by the NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards found that 58% of entrepreneurs surveyed experienced mental health problems with conditions such as anxiety (21%), depression (19%) and stress (41%), and 55% of respondents he said running a business has harmed his mental health. Dr. Michael Freeman, a psychiatrist and researcher at UC San Francisco, conducted a study in 2015 that illustrates the different founders of the rest of the population. He found that 72% of employers reported having a mental health history, in contrast to only 48% of participants in the comparison.
It is understandable to want to continue until we achieve what we consider successful, or what our goals are. But this is a sure way to fail, give up, or experience exhaustion. Keep these facts and tips in mind during your entrepreneurial journey, so that you can be healthier and happier.
1. Entrepreneurs are the main asset of their business
We like to think that our e-books, courses, products, services, etc., are our biggest asset, but the fact is that we are our biggest asset. Think about it, if we are always so busy “taking care of business” that we neglect our health and happiness, causing mental problems, fatigue and exhaustion, how valuable would we be to our business?
2. Being healthy influences motivation
If you don’t have time to go to the gym, you can do something as simple as walking. I put on my headphones, turn on some of my favorite songs, and walk away. This sweat starts to flow, and I tell you, these endorphins to make me feel good help clear my mind and put me on a higher level of peace and clarity. It increases my mood. If you haven’t already, add some kind of physical activity to your life and try to do it at least three times a week. Healthy eating also helps. I’m not saying you have to be a healthy food addict, but replacing soft drinks with water and eating more proper foods also helps. Also, make sure you are getting plenty of sleep. When you are healthy and happy, you are more focused, more energized and productive.

3. Use your circle
Stay away from people who disappoint you. Have conversations and interactions with people that increase your happiness and peace, such as family or friends. If you can’t have this interaction in person for any reason, a Zoom meeting can be helpful. It is also ideal to have close relationships with other entrepreneurs. Who knows what you are experiencing more than another entrepreneur? If you don’t have a circle of enterprising friends, join one or create one of your own.
Meetup is a website that allows users to arrange meetings with other people who enjoy the same activities. Some common examples include sports teams, reading clubs, entrepreneurs, startups and social groups. When you register, you can find a group that fits the activity you are looking for or create your own group to bring others. Dell Women’s Entrepreneur Network (DWEN) is another great resource. They bring together women entrepreneurs from around the world to help them connect, expand their businesses, and ultimately succeed. The DWEN community welcomes all levels of entrepreneurs, from startups to scaleups. You need to have balance.
4. Prioritize your mental health
If you feel that something is not right inside you, do not ignore it. Ask for help. The SAMHSA National Helpline, 1-800-662-HELP (4357) (also known as the Treatment Referral Routing Service) or TTY: 1-800-487-4889 is a confidential, free service. 24 hours a day, 365 -Information service day a year, in English and Spanish, for people and relatives with mental disorders and / or substance abuse. This service provides referrals to local treatment centers, support groups, and community organizations.
5. Relax, refresh, recharge
It’s important to relax, refresh, and recharge, because when we don’t, it causes stress. And stress can silence positive traits, which can have an impact on our interpersonal relationships as well as our coping mechanisms. Do something that relaxes you, makes you feel refreshed or recharges you. Some of the things that help me are reading, writing and a hot bath. Pause, even if only for 10 minutes. Stay away from emails, cell phones, television, and social media. If you can, take a 30-minute nap. Go stay. In general, make your health and happiness a priority.
