World Baseball Classic live updates: Pool C, Pool D group play

The 2023 Baseball World Classic continued on Tuesday with four highly anticipated matches, a pair in both Pool C and Pool D.

First, Group D play took center stage as Venezuela held off Nicaragua in the first match of the day.

Later, Group C was in action as Canada shut out Colombia (despite losing Freddie Freeman for the game), followed by the Dominican Republic’s dominant offensive display against Israel in the second game of Group D. To close out the things in Group C, Mexico ended Great Britain’s struggle in 2023.

Group A group play, which took place in Taichung, Taiwan, ended on Sunday, with Cuba and Italy advancing to the quarter-finals. Elsewhere in Tokyo, Group B was completed earlier on Monday, with Japan and Australia advancing.

The WBC began on March 7 and will conclude on March 21 with the championship match (Tuesday, 7 p.m. ET, FS1) in Florida. The quarter-final matches will take place on March 15-18, followed by the semi-finals on March 19-20.

As baseball managers say, always sell it out. Mexico embodied that mantra in the bottom of the second inning, getting their first run of the night off an infield hit in the first.

Mexico took a 2-1 lead thanks to their nine-hole hitter Alexis Wilson, who hit a liner to left field to give her squad the lead.

The reliever Jesús Cruz had fans in Mexico exalted as he retired the side in the bottom of the eighth inning, and his own energy more than matched that of the crowd.

The team handled business in the ninth to avoid Great Britain and keep their own title hopes alive.

Dominican Republic 10, Israel 0 (Group D)

I rocked it!

19-year-old minor leaguer Jacob Steinmetz has probably never seen a bigger stage than this one. But his manager entrusted him with a huge spot in the starting duties, and he looked solid early on, retiring All-Star Manny Machado on several occasions to get into the first inning.

Right on the nose

However, DR took a 1-0 lead late in the first, courtesy of this screaming liner from Eloy Jimenez.

Machado was sent down in the first inning, but answered in the third with a momentous fly that sailed 437 feet.

The Dominican template stuck in another race in that inning on this Ketel Marte drive double.

The Dominican hitters were out and erupting, and the team got two more runs on this Julio Rodriguez dribbler.

Many driven by Manny

After his big walk in the third, Machado collected two more RBIs in a tough run to the opposite field.

Robinson Cano added another RBI to put DR up 8-0, before the crowd had a chance to heap their praise on team GM Nelson Cruz.

Jean Segura, also known as Mr. Cool, calm and collected he came out for the team to a cheer from the crowd, winning it for the DR 10-0.

FINAL: Canada 5, Colombia 0 (Group C)

Playing for something bigger

Colombia starting pitcher Harold Ramirez’s blue hair was easily distinguished on camera, and according to Jon Morosi, that’s exactly how he wanted it to be.

After a clutch scratch and throw awayCanada struck first in the top of the fourth inning on a grounder by Bo Naylor.

Rio Gomez, son of the late Pedro Gómezhe got a chance to shine for the Colombian national team, and he made the most of it with his mother in attendance, pitching a scoreless sixth inning.

Canada was knocking on the door for another run in the seventh, but Oscar Mercado reached to catch it to prevent the run.

Freeman leaves the game

Dodgers star first baseman Freddie Freeman left the game after injuring his hamstring during a swing.

After scoring one more run in the bottom of the game, Canada took the lead on a towering home run off the bat of Otto Lopez. And you alone have to hear how it sounded.

Canada closed things down in the bottom half of the inning to put themselves in a great position to advance.

FINAL: Venezuela 4. Nicaragua 1 (Group D)

Down in order!

Nicaraguan starting pitcher Erasmo Ramírez was cooking early, retiring three straight Venezuelan batters in the first inning to give his squad an early boost.

Nicaragua went up 1-0 after loading the bases in the second inning, giving this dribbler up the middle its first run.

After Nicaragua pushed Eduardo Rodríguez out of the game with seven hitsreliever Jose Ruiz cleaned up with three outs in just three innings to help Venezuela out of the inning.

Venezuela tied the score at 1 on a double by Andrés Giménez, which scored Ronald Acuña Jr.

The fourth inning was huge for the Venezuelan squad, who tacked on two more runs thanks to a double by Eugenio Suarez.

Anthony Santander added to their lead in the fifth with an RBI double up the middle to make it 3.

Stylish closure

José Quijada burst his patented shirt, and Suarez showed some fine glove skills as Venezuela kept their opponents’ attack at bay to end the game with a 4-1 win. Nicaragua will now have to requalify for the 2026 event.
