Poland vs Argentina

Setting the scene

Argentina are aiming to reach the round of 16 for the 13th time in their last 14 World Cups. Sitting in what appears to be an unusual spot, Argentina must either win on Wednesday or draw with Poland and Mexico or draw or beat Saudi Arabia. Poland, on the other hand, are aiming to remain unbeaten after securing a win and a draw in their previous two group stage matches. Like Argentina, Poland are also in a win-and-go situation to advance to the knockout stages. Sitting on four points at the top of Group C, Poland can also advance with a draw.

Lionel Messi take the pitch for the last time at the World Cup?

With Argentina facing elimination, Messi leads his country’s team onto the pitch for what could be his final World Cup match, having suggested this will be his last World Cup.

7′: Messi wins the battle for the ball, but the opportunity does not end.

The 35-year-old threw himself into the mix to regain possession for Argentina. However, Messi was unable to complete the highlight play and put a point on the board.

10′: More opportunities for Messi

Messi drifted down the left side of the box before the Polish defense rose to clear his shot angle and led to an easy save for Wojciech Szczesny.

28′: Argentina closes but without a cigar

Julián Álvarez had a great chance in front of the net to put Argentina 1-0 up, but his shot was blocked. Marcos Acuña got the rebound but his shot went wide to the right.

33′: Close to the Olympic!

Argentina’s Angel Di María on the verge of a goal for the ages with this corner kick.

36′: Happy making saves

The Polish goalkeeper continues to make saves to keep Argentina off the table.

38′: Messi penalty

A VAR review determined that the Argentina striker was fouled in the box and awarded a penalty.

39′: Messi stopped in the PK!

In what has so far been a battle of the titans, Szczęsny beat Messi on the penalty spot, guessing correctly to keep the game goalless.

Middle: Both teams are still scoreless

Despite the 0-0, the Argentina-Poland match was exciting. Argentina created chances consistently, but Szczęsny was up to the challenge, making nine saves in the first half. Former USA goalkeeper Tim Howard holds the record for most saves in a World Cup game, recording 15 in one game in 2014.

If the current results hold in this match and the Mexico-Saudi Arabia match, both Argentina and Poland would progress out of Group C. However, a goal from Saudi Arabia would put pressure on Argentina to take the lead in the second half, as Argentina would need a win to advance if Saudi Arabia wins.

47′: At last Argentina goes through

In the end, Szczęsny was unable to stop as Alexis MacAllister’s shot from a cross went into the back of the net to give Argentina a 1-0 lead.

Mexico took a 1-0 lead as Argentina scored. However, Poland would still advance, along with Argentina, if current results hold. Poland go up by two on goal difference over Mexico after the last few goals.

50′: Poland almost equalise

Kamil Glik had a good header from a set piece for Poland, but his shot went wide as the Pole looked for a goal.

60′: Poland under pressure

Poland are still in a position to advance if current results hold. However, Mexico went up 2-0 and almost added a third goal, which was ruled out for offside. If Mexico goes up 3-0, Poland would need another goal to advance, as Mexico would tie Poland on goal differential but have the lead in goals scored.

67′: Argentina doubles its lead

Álvarez found the back of the net as he fired an accurate shot into the top right corner, giving Argentina a 2-0 lead.

Poland are still in second place in Group C, but only thanks to clean play points. Any goal scored in the last 20 minutes or more in any game will likely determine who advances between Poland and Mexico.

86′: Argentina almost makes it 3-0

Lautaro Martínez was one on one with Szczęsny and had a golden opportunity to make it 3-0. His shot, however, went wide.

87′: Poland hanging on by a thread

Poland’s hopes of making the knockout stages are on the thinnest of ice. Clean play points are the only thing separating Poland from being in Mexico instead of out.

90′ + 3′: Poland makes a tremendous save

Jakub Kiwior made his best impression in Szczęsny, making the stop for Poland right in front of the net to potentially save their World Cup chances.
