World Cup 2022 odds: United States most popular bet heading into the World Cup

It’s no surprise that Brazil is atop the World Cup odds board and getting its share of attention, less than two weeks until the 32-team tournament kicks off on FOX.

Defending champion France is also close to the top. And the other usual suspects are also on the odds, including Spain, Germany, England and No. 2 pick Argentina.

But Americans, and often American punters, love underdogs. The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) is certainly that, and apparently a lot of people feel it’s their patriotic duty to throw a few bucks at the huge long shot. Or at least bet with your heart, as there are currently more bets on the USMNT to win the World Cup than any other team on FOX Bet.

Ticket toppers

For Dylan Brossman, senior director of business operations at FOX Bet, the flood of American bettors supporting Team USA is expected.

“It’s no surprise that the U.S. has the most tickets right now,” Brossman said. “Right behind [Team USA] they are Brazil and Germany”.

But there is a huge gap between the USMNT and Brazil/Germany in future World Cup odds. At FOX Bet, Brazil are +375 favorites to lift the trophy, and Germany are sixth choice at +1000.

Meanwhile, Team USA is the 200-1 co-17th choice. This means that a $100 bet would, very hypothetically, win $20,000 if the USA won the World Cup.

And Team USA’s odds have been dropping as the Nov. 20 start of the tournament nears.

“The average price we have [offered] in the US right now it’s about 99-1,” Brossman said. “We’ve done it [offered] at various prices, from 100-1 to 150-1 to 200-1”.

Loss leader

With Team USA leading the ticket count and the odds so high, even a $10 bet right now is a cool $2,000 at FOX Bet, the onus is mounting fast. FOX Bet wouldn’t necessarily mind the USMNT having a good tournament, perhaps making it out of the group stage and advancing to the Round of 16.

But the Americans reaching the final would be a cause for concern for Brossman and the risk room.

“They are by far our biggest liability, thanks to that price,” Brossman said. “We would have a pretty negative outcome if the US managed the impossible.”

The odds indicate that the United States winning it all is almost impossible. From a book’s perspective, a liability is only a liability if it is carried out.

If you feel it’s your patriotic duty to put some money into Team USA, by all means do it. Most importantly, have fun with it. Treat the World Cup like March Madness. As we’ve seen in recent tournaments, an underdog always has a chance.
