World Cup Now: Why Germany is the real winner of Costa Rica vs. Japan

Costa Rica tried to redeem themselves from their 7-0 loss to Spain by beating Japan 1-0 with a late goal from Keysher Fuller.

But while the dudes If it were the team that got three points, Germany could be the real winner; former US men’s national team players Jimmy Conrad and Sacha Kljestan explain why on “World Cup Now.”

Why Costa Rica’s win is good for Germany

Conrad: This result gives Germany a much more viable chance. Even if they lose against Spain, they could beat Costa Rica in their last group game and still go through [to the knockout round] in three points, which is pretty mind-blowing to think about.

Kljestan: Germany must be very happy watching this match. They have a big party Sunday against Spain (2 p.m. ET on FS1 and the FOX Sports app). Honestly, even if you lose by one goal to Spain, you go into the last day knowing you can go out and beat Costa Rica and get out of the group.

Conrad: This assumes that Spain gets a Japan result again, of course. If Germany lose on Sunday night, they will need Spain to get all nine points from the three games, and if Germany get a good win against Costa Rica on a good goal difference, they would finish second in the group.
